Nofio
An Interactive Swimming Toy
A swimming toy with a gamification concept that was developed with an extensive user-centered research approach.
Design Concept
Nofio is an interactive swimming toy that was developed using a ‘gamification’ concept.
Gamification is a strategy that integrates entertaining and immersive gaming elements into nongame contexts to enhance engagement and motivate certain behaviors. Gamification uses game design and mechanics, such as badges, leaderboards, points, and rewards, to encourage active participation and make tasks enjoyable.
In this design concept, gamification is applied to the core design concept to make swimming sports and education more engaging for children, as well as encourage them to have a more active and healthy lifestyle.
Background and Findings (Primary and Secondary Research)
Children are becoming weaker, less muscular, and unable to do physical tasks that previous generations found simple, research has revealed. As a generation dedicated to online pursuits grows up, 10-year-olds can do fewer sit-ups and are less able to hang from wall bars in a gym. Arm strength has declined in that age group, as has their ability to grip an object firmly.
The findings, published in the child health journal Acta Paediatrica, have led to fresh concern about the impact on children’s health caused by the shift away from outdoor activities.
Even in the swimming pool, most children do not do any meaningful active swimming activities. Some tend to bring their handheld game console to the pool and play digital games instead of swimming.
The Technology
Using a distance sensor as the main technology, Nofio will easily detect any players who wear the Nofio watch and will run away or catch the players based on how the players have programmed it.
