Germ W – UI/UX Project
Educational Cleaning App
Germ Wars is an educational app that was developed using a gamification concept to teach children to clean and maintain the space they live in with their family.
Background
Children love to make a mess, but cleaning? Usually not so much, and too often, the onus of tidying up falls on mom or dad, with a survey from ClosetMaid finding that the average parent has to pick up after their kid 28 times a week.
Tidying up after your child — when they’re perfectly capable of doing it themselves — is problematic on a few levels. One, it’s creating more work for you. Two, it’s sending the message on an extremely literal level, that they can’t clean up their own mess and/or that they needn’t bother as someone else will do it for them.
Dr. Tamar Chansky, psychologist and author of several books including “Freeing Your Child from Anxiety” points to a study published by the University of Minnesota, which found that giving children household chores at an early age “helps to build a lasting sense of mastery, responsibility and self-reliance.” The study, which followed over 80 children throughout their lives, found that kids who started doing chores early (at about age 3 or 4) were more likely to have good relationships with friends and family, as well as academic success and eventually success in their careers when compared with those who didn’t have chores as young kids.
Just as young children need to learn the value of money; they need to learn the value of cleaning. However, most kids are not happy doing cleaning chores.
Design Concept
Using a ‘gamification’ concept, this app was developed to make cleaning chores and education more fun to do for children. Gamification is a strategy that integrates entertaining and immersive gaming elements into nongame contexts to enhance engagement and motivate certain behaviors. Gamification uses game design and mechanics, such as badges, leaderboards, points, and rewards, to encourage active participation and make tasks enjoyable.
The fun, playful, and cheerful design language is used to make the app more engaging to the children.
A hero character ‘The Cleanman’ is introduced after the user sign-in to their account to inspire and encourage the children.
After the user is ready to ‘clean’ (by pressing the ‘let’s go button’), they will choose their weapon to help them against the germs. After a weapon is chosen, user needs to put their phone in the cleaning tool that they chosed (the tools will be specifically designed for this app or there will be accesories that can be attached to any general cleaning tools).
The app will randomly show germ characters in dirty places (debris, trash, etc) in the camera. After the cleaning is done, information on the germs that have been annihilated will be shown for education purposes.
Users can access the information in the ‘settings’ to see their cleaning statistics, bacteria/ germs information, adjust their weapon.
